About "civil" in BIP39
- "civil" has 5 letters, but the first three, "civ", already identify it, because "ci" also begins cigar, cinnamon, circle, citizen and city. Three letters are enough for only 604 of the 2048 words.
- The same spelling is in the French BIP39 wordlist, but as word #404 (index 403), not #333. A wallet set to French reads "civil" as 00110010011 instead of 00101001100, and decodes index 332 as "capter".
- "civi" is unique only within the English list: it also begins civile in the Italian list, so a four-letter backup should say which list it uses.
